Tanjung Belungkor Ferry Terminal To Be Entry Point For Islands Bound Tourists

JOHOR BAHARU, July 18 (Bernama) -- Several ferry operators have agreed to operate from the Tanjung Belungkor Ferry Terminal, Johor Port Authority (LPJ) chairman Abdul Halim Sulaiman said Wednesday.

He said their acceptance makes it possible for LPJ to popularise the terminal among ferry users and develop it into an entry point for foreign visitors.

"Their agreement means there can be ferry services between Tanjung Belungkor and Changi in Singapore, Stulang Laut here, the islands off Johor and Singapore's Eastern Anchorage," he told Bernama Wednesday.

The Tanjung Belungkor terminal began operating ferry services to the Changi Terminal in 1993.

In 2002, Asia's largest cruise operator, Star Cruises, took over that ferry service and made the Tanjung Belungkor Terminal the home port for its cruise ships such as Megastar Aries and Megastar Taurus.

LPJ, under its 2005-2010 strategic plan, plans to ramp up activities at the Tanjung Belungkor terminal by increasing freshwater sales to seagoing vessels, cargo handling and barter trade, in addition to the ferry services.

The terminal, located adjacent to Pengerang, has 90 metres of wharves, two pontoons which are landing craft jetties as well as facilities for small boats and ferries.

Abdul Halim said the Tanjung Belungkor Ferry Terminal aims to be the entry point especially for tourists from Singapore and Indonesia bound for the islands off Johor such as Pulau Besar, Pulau Rawa and Pulau Sibu.
