Ministry Of Energy, Water & Communications To Adopt IPv6 By April

PUTRAJAYA, March 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is scheduled to migrate to the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) by next month, with the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications taking the lead to adopt the technology.

Director of National Advanced IPv6 Centre (NAV6), Universiti Sains Malaysia Associate Professor Dr Sureswaran Ramadas said the IPv6 network would place Malaysia in a position of strength in terms of the new Internet technology.

"We will start the process in April. We are just waiting for final approval and the letter from the ministry for us to start," he told reporters after the launch of Next Generation Networks Symposium: Malaysia IPv6 Forum Kickoff here, Thursday.

Minister of Energy, Water and Communications, Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik, officiated at the symposium.

Sureswaran said the ministry would identify one or more ministries or agencies to switch to the IPv6 after its adoption.

The government has established a National IPv6 council under the ministry to provide the vision, mission and strategic plan for IPv6 implementation in the country.

The NAV6 is involved in conducting cutting-edge research and development work, training IPv6 experts and planning appropriate programmes to make Malaysia an IPv6-enabled nation by 2010.

It will be used to assign IP addresses in the future.

Sureswaran said China, Japan and South Korea had fully adopted IPv6.

Earlier, in his speech, Dr Lim said the symposium would increase awareness of Next Generation networks, the IPv6 and the technical, business and social issues regarding the implementation of the technology.

"This technology, which is part and parcel of the phenomenal growth of information and communication technology, has brought radical changes to business, social and goverment activities," he said.

He urged the Next Generation service providers to provide entertainment services, games, secured communication for e-banking and e-commerce and other market-driven business solutions.

"Instead of merely addressing their customers' communication needs, they must be capable of forging partnerships with their customers, facilitating business transactions and addressing their overall business needs," he said.
