Puan Sri Laila Taib Still Heads Wanita Perkim

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Muslim Welfare Organization (Perkim) has clarified that Puan Sri Laila Taib is still head of Wanita Perkim at the national level.

In fact, Laila also remains as the chairman of the Sarawak division of Perkim while Datuk Siti Rahmah Kassim is still chairman of the Negri Sembilan division of Perkim, a statement by Perkim said Monday.

"Perkim denies that there is a rift in Perkim and reports that Puan Seri Datuk Amar Laila Taib had been expelled is not true.

"Both Puan Sri Laila and Datuk Siti Rahmah are still members of Perkim," said a statement signed by Perkim honorary treasurer Lt Kol (B) Abdul Kadir Abdul Hamid.

The statement added there were factual mistakes on the expulsion of Perkim members reported by several newspapers including the date of the resignation of Tan Sri Taib Mahmud as Perkim president.

Taib resigned on Jan 21 and was accepted by the National Perkim general meeting that subsequently appointed former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as successor.

The statement added the Perkim national council meeting on Sept 26 decided to expel Datuk Noor Mohamad Backer Abu Bakar Backer (Perkim national vice president and Penang Perkim chairman), Abu Bakar Datuk Sidek (honorary secretary of Penang Perkim) and Mohamed Saifudin Mohamed Ali (former honorary general secretary of Perkim).

"The three were expelled as members and no longer represent Perkim at national, division and branch level on any matter. They were expelled for indiscipline and going against the organization's rules," the statement added.

The statement was released in response to a statement by Noor Mohamad Backer that Perkim was in turmoil following the expulsion of several senior leaders for disciplinary reasons on Sept 26.
