Practice Of Recycling Still At Low Level, Says Waste Management Body
KANGAR, June 28 (Bernama) -- While public awareness of recycling continues to rise, the practice of recycling by the people remains more or less stagnant, said Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (PPSPPA) chief executive officer Datuk Zaini Md Nor.
A PPSPPA study last year showed that public awareness of recycling had risen by five per cent to 85 per cent but the practice of recycling did not rise in tandem, he said at a PPSPPA dinner with the Perlis media, here, last night.
He said a rise in the awareness on recycling would indirectly help expedite the process of maintaining Malaysia as a clean and beautiful country.
Zaini said he hoped that the mass media in the country would help raise awareness in the people on the importance of recycling.
He said 2.5 million copies of old newspapers weighing up to 857 tonnes were recycled daily in the country, but this comprised only three per cent of the waste managed by PPSPPA.
