Sarawak Hopes Overtaking Lanes On Kuching-miri Road Can Be Ready In Two Years

KUCHING, June 15 (Bernama) -- Sarawak hopes that all the 95 overtaking lanes proposed for construction along the trunk road between Miri and Kuching can be completed in two years, State Infrastructure Development and Communication Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong said Friday.

He said that for this year, 10 of such lanes of one-kilometre length each would be built following initial funding of RM50 million from the federal government.

"We will not stop here (to ask for federal funds) but will continue to get our plans ready based on their (federal) rolling plan," he told reporters after inspecting the Tabuan River second bridge project, here.

Last year, the State Public Works Department had estimated that it would cost about RM400 million to build the required number of overtaking lanes.

Manyin said the state requested for funds to build the overtaking lanes at strategic locations along the 900-km trunk road after the federal government found that the present traffic volume had yet to warrant upgrading of the road to a highway.
