Muhyiddin Proposes A Second Round Of BR1M Payment
KUALA SELANGOR, June 7 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he has proposed to the Cabinet that the government distribute a second round of the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M).
He said the matter was discussed by the Cabinet at its weekly meeting Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
"I informed the prime minister that if we have the money, we should distribute the BR1M a second time," he said at the meet-the-people session at the centenary celebration of Sekolah Kebangsaan Tambak Jawa, here.
Later, in KUALA LUMPUR, Muhyiddin said only Najib could determine a second payment of BR1M, a RM500 payment given to households with a monthly income of RM3,000 or less.
"The matter is left to the prime minister to decide, provided there are additional funds. "This matter (of giving BR1M a second time) had been raised by MPs, senators and local leaders who reported back that it was the best way to ease the financial burden of the people.
"These views were forwarded to the prime minister," he told a news conference after meeting the people of Gombak at an event organised by the Gombak affiliation of NGOs at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melawati.
Muhyiddin said the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had spent more than RM2 billion to distribute the BR1M payment to 4.7 million households.
Besides the BR1M payment, the government also provided RM200 1Malaysia book vouchers to 1.3 million university and Form Six students and RM100 to 5.3 million primary pupils and secondary students up to Form Five.
