Police Arrest Three In Abduction Of Lawyer Over RM180,000 Unsettled Debt
By Norazurra Aziz
KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Three men have been detained by the police to facilitate investigations into the abduction of a lawyer who was released on Wednesday, after his family paid RM150,000 to secure his release.
The suspects were picked up at separate locations in the city yesterday.
Initially, the police classified the case as abduction but reclassified it when further investigations linked it to an unsettled debt amounting to about RM180,000.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said Saturday, the abduction of the 35-year-old lawyer was linked to the unsettled debt.
He said the payment might not have been ransom but the lawyer could have owed the trio the money.
"The three (suspects) have claimed the lawyer owed them RM180,000. The lawyer's family gave the group a cheque for RM150,000 to secure his freedom.
"When they received the cheque, the lawyer was abandoned at a house in Rawang," he added.
Ku was speaking to reporters after attending a traditional games event involving the police and the community, in conjunction with the 205th Police Day celebrations in Kerinchi here today.
Also present were Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh and his deputy, Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh, as well as district police chiefs.
Ku said the lawyer told the police that he was abducted and held captive at a house in Rawang last Saturday.
He said the lawyer claimed to have had breakfast with several men at a cafe in Metro Prima Kepong before he was taken to a house in Rawang.
There, the lawyer said he was assaulted and given something to drink, which left him drowsy and unconscious.
